The ship was named in honor of Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, who was killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor while aboard the USS Arizona.

The crew quickly imbued the vessel with a unique character. During its maiden voyage through New York Harbor, a Jolly Roger pirate flag flew from the mast, and the painted figure of a pirate—Captain William Kidd—appeared on the smokestack. Thanks to this, the destroyer earned its famous nickname: the "Pirate of the Pacific."

From its very first months of service, the USS Kidd distinguished itself through an exceptionally aggressive fighting style and high operational effectiveness. During World War II, it participated in operations at Wake Island, Rabaul, Tarawa, Guam, Leyte and Okinawa, among other locations. The ship screened the fleet against kamikaze attacks, rescued downed pilots and conducted shore bombardments. On April 11, 1945, it was struck by a kamikaze aircraft; however, despite suffering heavy casualties, the crew kept the vessel in the fight. Following World War II, the USS Kidd also served during the Korean War and the Cold War era. The ship was decommissioned on June 19, 1964, and transferred to the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. In 1982, the vessel was acquired by the Louisiana Naval War Memorial Commission and opened to visitors as a museum ship. Today, it remains the only surviving ship of its class preserved in its World War II configuration. It is currently undergoing extensive restoration to showcase its historical significance even more fully.

Expand Your Collection

The USS Kidd makes an excellent addition to the HISTORY COLLECTION WWII series.
