Yamato (大和) was a battleship built during World War II and served in the Imperial Japanese Navy. This is the first ship of the Yamato class, which, together with its twin Musashi, were the largest battleships built in the history of mankind. The main idea of building such powerful warships was an arms race with the USA, which dominated the Pacific. Construction of the Yamato began in 1937 and was commissioned on 16 December 1941, a week after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The ship was armed, among others, with nine monstrous 460 mm guns. Its total length is as much as 263 meters, width 38.9 meters, draft 11 meters and displacement 65,000 tons. It reached a top speed of 27 knots (50 km/h). Nearly 2500 people served on the ship. She was sunk in a major engagement on 7 April 1945 by American torpedo planes and bombers.
The battleship Yamato is a huge model made of COBI construction blocks. Like other warships, it was designed in a model scale of 1:300.
